Assistive Technology Tools for Writing

According to Szlut, & Breath (2001), dysgraphia can be classified into three groups of symptoms including "penmanship-related aspects of writing(e.g., motor control and execution), Linguistic or language based aspects of writing (e.g., spelling and composing, or a combination" (p.314). Common to all of these classifications is a difficulty expressing thoughts through writing.
Student who have these difficulties demonstrate three types of problems in the curriculum.
  1. Difficulties with writing ideas
  2. Difficulty in written production including decrease in legibility due to problems with letter formation, size, alignment, spelling and grammar
  3. Writing that is markedly simple and brief may be due to problems with the mechanics of writing or the processing of the information to be written.
Recent research reports that 70% of student's grades in the classroom are a result of written communication.
